Happenstance… I picked up my girlfriend’s camera to help her with her photography assignment when we were teenagers…raced to the drugstore to process the film and fell in love with the magic of photography.

Was I good enough? Did I have what it took? The epitome of fashion photography at the time (1976) was Italian Vogue. That was the goal. Within 7 years, I was there. I was shooting for Italian Vogue. It was simply an internal validation I needed so that I could pursue the career of my dreams.

A career blessed with the opportunity of incredible clients, such as: Holt Renfrew; The Bay; Diesel Jeans; Parasuco Jeans; JC Penney ; Nordstrom; Armani Men’s; Zegna; Nike; Montauk Sofa; The National Fur Association; Ontario Tourism; Cuban Tourism; Casino Niagara; BMG Music; Sony Music; The Globe and Mail; Maclean’s; Toronto Life; Report on Business Magazine; The Walrus; Financial Post Magazine; EnRoute; Chatelaine; Canadian Art; Maisonneuve; Italian Vogue; Russian Vogue; Vogue Bambini; Donna; Flare.

The era when the photographer was the conductor of the photoshoot.

Fun: ditching the elaborate studios full of sophisticated equipment designed to simulate reality, to moving the shoot outside, chasing natural light with a long lens, and being at the mercy of nature. The magical moment of intersection when natural light meets natural beauty…the beauty of the female form…the beauty of humanity…the beauty of landscape. The result: heightened reality.

My voicemail recording: “I’m either on a shoot or sailing.” Yacht racing around the world. The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The Johnny Walker Miami to Montego Bay. (to name a few).

The adrenaline of adventure, water and surrender to nature. That’s me. I am Don.
