During college I studied under the English photographer, the late John Blakemore, who first introduced me to figure photography and the work of people such as Bill Brandt, Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham.
The glamour style of figure work holds little interest for me preferring abstract poses and positioning. When I lived North of 60 found that the abstract landscape challenged me to fit abstract poses into such landscape.
It is difficult to break away from the glamour/fashion style, in part because it is a predominant style we are all familiar with and many models have adapted their look to. In my experience it is an educated, freewheeling models that offers the most to abstract work. The best models can take a direction and improvise on it. It is a foolish photographer that doesn’t follow such improvisations.
