During my almost 40 year career as a community news photographer, I was always seeking different angles to capture images for the various publications I worked for. Most of the assignments entailed gathering the images at what could be considered normal angles, that is, at eye level.

On occasion, I would have the opportunity to shoot from a higher angle (lower angles were fun to do as well!). Whether it was photographing a subject from above, like the second story of a facility, or getting on top of a bridge to gather a view of gas cylinders strewn across the highway, it always brought a different view to the story that I was covering.

Whenever the occasion arose to go even higher, I would jump at the opportunity. Once, I got a call half an hour before the end of my shift to go hot air ballooning and get views of Burlington from 400 – 500 feet in the air. A couple of times, I was asked to charter a Cessna with pilot to get an aerial view of a car dealership location, and another time, to illustrate a location where tires were dumped in a midtown setting.

In the last few years, it became a bit easier to be able to fly a drone in Canada, and about five years ago, I was able to get my license to fly these aircraft.

This image was taken near the end of the day just before Christmas a couple of years ago. I was at an open field day at the drone training school I have been a part of, and we were wrapping up for the day. A couple of us saw the way the shadows of the trees were falling on the snow, and I decided to launch my drone to capture the image you see today.
