I returned to photography after decades away—not with a plan, but from the quiet pull of noticing. Box and Shadow began during the pandemic. I had ordered takeout from my favourite bar and left the box sitting on an orange side table. The next morning, the sunlight hit it just right. I took a photo with my iPhone. Later, I reworked the image, repeating, layering, and adjusting it until it felt finished. That’s how a lot of my work begins: with something overlooked, made visible through process.
I have no formal training. What I know, I learned walking beside my father, George S. Zimbel. He was a photographer known for his humanist approach and was a lifetime member of CAPIC. As a child, I learned by listening to his questions about light, about timing, about the feel of a moment. It wasn’t structured—it was part of our life. Though my work looks different, the influence is still there: the belief that small moments matter, and that paying attention is its own form of art.
In 2023, I held my first solo exhibition, Whispers of the Ordinary, at the 918 Bathurst Centre for Culture, Arts, Media & Education. It marked a return—not just to showing work, but to calling myself an artist again. My practice is grounded in walking, in noticing, and in trusting the image to take shape over time.
